The NASCAR Cup Series cruises into South Florida as the playoffs dwindle, with only two races remaining before the championship race on Nov. 5 at Phoenix Raceway.
Kyle Larson became the first playoff driver to clinch a berth in the Championship 4 after winning the Round of 8 opener last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, leaving three spots remaining.
Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway could go a long way toward crystalizing the championship picture before the final race of the third round, next weekend at Martinsville Speedway, where four drivers will be eliminated and four will be celebrating a chance to race for a title.
If one of the seven playoff drivers wins Sunday, he would join Larson in the Championship 4. But while a victory is the ultimate goal, a strong finish could be nearly as important if Larson or a non-playoff driver wins at Homestead, since that would mean at least two drivers would reach the Championship 4 based on points.
